Thread: Distributor gear break in

I just got a new MSD distributor and it came with tube of cam break in lube and a note to apply it liberally to the gear and not to run synthetic oil.
My problem is that I just changed my oil for the season and used 10 quarts of Mobil One. Draining my boat is a pain and that's $50.00 worth of oil that hasn't seen the lake yet.
Is break in on a dist gear really that critical? Has anybody seen one fail?
    Thanks
    Gary

Is this a bronse one on a billet roller, or a steel one on a flat tappet deal?
I have never seen a problem. It is not like a lifter to a cam where the break in has to be perfect. There, you cannot use synthetics or certain additives because the faces will not "mate" properly. But I have seen excessive wear on the gears. Could not really say it was due to break in, put in wrong, etc. As long as it is just a new gear, I would just lube it up and run it. (But I am kind of a back yard red neck mechanic.)

It is a steel gear on a flat tappet cam. It's an Isky hydraulic in a 25 year old motor.
