    Help me out here please.
Is a flame arrester any different than an air filter? Other than the price.
I have a Holley 750 and what to replace the plain round with something cool looking. Will this affect performance in any way?
    Any suggestions.

I got a ticket on the Ca delta a few years back for having 2 paper air filters under a injector type dual carb scoop. The sheriff said that the scope meant that the carbs were covered and thus needed arrestor type filters (metal mesh filter). Got the arrestors (expensive) and got the ticket fixed.

The air filter needs to be marine approved.

Not sure about performance, but CG requires them to prevent your boat from catching fire after a backfire in the carb. Get one and be safe!

This is assuming a covered engine...
If it's out in the open (flat bottom or jetboat style) anything goes.
