Thread: A Sleek Craft..? Can anybody help ID this thing.

This is supposedly a SleekCraft as per the former owner and the SleekCraft tag that is on the port side gunwhale(screwed into place.) We're getting ready for a full resto and I was tinkering around on the transom looking for the vin numbers underneath the paint. I can't find them yet sanding by hand(kind of lazy). We just brought the new compressor home and should have it wired and plumbed for service early next week.
Can any body tell us something about this thing..? It can't be that old(early '70s)..? It had the shorty stringers and decked floor. Olds 455 Hardin package along with Jaccuzi pump. We're going to replace all of the wood including the transom and go with full length stringers this time as well as a rail mount. While we're at it we're going to fill everything in including removing the intake and filling in the bottom in preparation for a berkley style pump setup, cap the rub rail area and shoot it in gel coat once the glass work is finished. We just want a first class little river boat. We'll be sticking with the 455 under a new cover with transom exhaust. It'll do just fine for our needs and with a rail mount we can always make a change over to something else without to much effort if the desire should arise. The trailer is going to scrap. We'll go for a new unit.
Any thoughts on what year this thing may be..?

Yep, I do. That's a Sleekcraft Sportster, mine is a 1978, the hull is a Southwind splash, these boats are well built and heavier than the average 18" bubble deck, great lake/play boat.

What do you know about a Sleekcraft Rebel? I have a 1973 Rebel with a 468 chevy. I know it's also heavy. How fast are guy's going in this hull? :notam:

I thought mine was a Rebel when I bought it (hence my username), the Rebel was a better handling boat than the Sportster from what I've been told, they used to race the Rebel's, you might check with Oldrigger, he could probably tell you a few things on these. I asked some years ago about Sleekcrafts, there was another guy who actually had some history with racing the Rebel, can't remember who now.
As for speed, I understand the Sportsters will go low/mid 80's predictably, there is evidently a mod to the chines that adds stability at higher speeds. I myself would prefer to switch to a gullwing (or the perf hull of your choice) if I wanted to run more than high 70's or so. Mine runs around 55 mph, its fun to drive and has been as reliable as a hammer for the 5 years I've had it.

I think it is a Sleekcraft Kouai about 78 vintage. I have a Kouai that has the same engine cover except not with an air cleaner hole cut in the top, whoever did that. Mine also has the shorty stringers.
