It's a built in pressure relief. Lotsa pressure in the bowl.
Enuff to extinguish a small fire I reckon.

Starting a new post because I don't know how the water gets from the bowl to the engine? I took my bowl apart and don't understand how water from the pump gets forced through that teardrop port inside the pump. how does water flow from the impeller back through that hole instead of just going through the jet?????

My problem is that under pressure, no water comes through that hole and in turn the engine overheats. the plumbing is correct and new. the problem is that water doesn't flow through the barb and hole. Pulled the bowl and all is clear and undamaged . the boat is a 21' day cruiser, it still runs about 45mph.
Post some pics of your plumbing.
Take pictures of the water inlet, (tear drop hole), impeller, and the bowl. Post them, and maybe one of us will spot your problem. If you can not post them, e-mail them to me. We're here to help you.

One thing I have noticed is with a B impeller less water presure in the system than with a A2. Maybe you have a C or D cut impeller.
his impeller is a legend A cut.
Just bring them out so I can see them !!!
