Funny you should ask, my Dad says the boat he had was a '67 or '68 Howard with a Pontiac. It was originally a 389 and we put a 455 in it for it's last trip out. Unfortunately it went away 20 odd years ago, I always wonder what happened to it.
We only have a few pictures of it, maybe someone can confirm it is in fact a Howard. His was a v-drive, don't know about the availability of jet powered Howards, but being the late '60's I'd say not very many, if any.
Here it is at Perris in the early '70's

Absolutely no offense intended here. Just relaying some info.
I have a buddy that had one. He was running a BBF 390 FE in his. It weighed a friggin ton. Definitely one of the Heaviest layups I've ever seen. No doubt solid as hell, but not exactly condusive to big speed numbers. With the stock 390 FE and logs he was running maybe 60-65 on a good day. The thing porpoised like a mad mother too. I never drove the boat so it might've been his driving, or the setup.
Not trying to scare you out of it. Just relaying what I had seen and ridden in.
Oh yeah, his was in pretty rough shape too. Not at all taken care of.
It was kinda humerous as he was claiming speeds of 80+ mph before we actually went boating with him. I'm guessing that it was estimated because he was getting smoked real bad all day long by 70-75 mph jetboats. Hard to believe his estimated speed could be that far off, but there ya go.
    P.S. This Howard was a v-drive also.

My friends and I just bought this 1976 Howard Jet with a BBC 454. I'm not sure if it is the same as the earlier styles; I imagine not. Anyways, here are some pics.
