When you see something else you like and want to buy. I've heard 700 hours if you keep maintained on a regular basis. Does'nt always go that way though.
At what point do you start to thinking the motor has alot of hours?? Just looking for some general numbers, and opinions.

Had a friend with a 454 Mag with over 1000 hours and still ran great. I'm sure the 496 HO is just as good if not better. As long as it is stock and maintained I would think you could get that and more.
100, then its time for a new one...
With the motors in my boat? I would estimate 25 hours is old and means it is ready for rebuild..  I've since been told to service 496 HOs VERY Regular (more so than 454s or 502s).
My .02
Maybe that is why Kachina Ken calls them "Shit Boxes"???
Been running great for 11 hours straight this time.. :notam:

divorce? jk!
Bob Teague feels an estimated 2000 hours is safe.
I would have to agree. Air-cooled opposed motors have "time-between-overhaul" (TBO) figures in the 1700-2500 range. Those motors are not treated near as well as boat motors. They are similar - in that they are under a load all the time. Even at startup! The prop is attached to the crank snout, no clutch. Even on decent, they are still spinning the blades, even close to idle. No closed cooling. If these motors go 2000 hours, there is no reason a 496HO should not do the same or +1000.

Service is the key word, I would change oil every 15 to 20 hours on my old boat with a 454 Mag. Maybe a little over kill but it made me feel good when I was running it at WOT all day long.

So is 20 hours good life for your 525?
Nice boat.. Needs spots though..
