460 ford bad news bearings

pictures here are the #1 and #3 main bottom bearing. as you can see the crank also has some damage.. I know the bearings are trash.. i had planned on replacing them but didnt think they were in bad enough shape to mess up the crank.. what do you guys think i should do? just replace the bearings and keep fingers crossed? i had planned on buying a 600 horse motor next winter and dont want to throw a ton of cash into this one... a new motor this winter would be tough but can be done..http://www.***boat.com/image_center/...31IMG_0857.JPG http://www.***boat.com/image_center/...31IMG_0859.JPG http://www.***boat.com/image_center/...31IMG_0861.JPG

I would go have the crank turned and put in new bearings.

Thats what I would do. And get 3/4 round groove bearings.

Any idea what wen't wrong?
How did the top bearing of #2 look?
Was there an oiling problem?
How long have the bearings been in?
Is the crank straight?
Is the line hone straight?
Call me paranoid, but I would want to know what happened before I through new bearings in her.

the bearings have 8 hard seasons on them. these were the questions that were popping into my mind as well. never had any problems with this engine at all. was still running but figured since its out of the boat, might as well check the bottom end...how much cash to get the crank worked on ? was kinda leaning towards a crate hi power delio.. dont want to spend that much money on this old horse.. thanks

Thats what I would do. And get 3/4 round groove bearings.
round groove bearings? please explain ST. I have also checked several rod bearings. they too are worn down to the copper in some places but without all the damge to the crank. i think the tolerances too tight from the get go..

I first thought it looked like water on the bearing. Thinking it was only a season old.

Really, just like that huh Better re read his post and look at the pics, wouldn't you want to know the reason for the wipe out so it don't happen again after you cut it and slap it together and run it???..
