I built my own many years ago out of 2x2 square steel, not that tough to build (no not the one in the pic). And it bolts together for storage ect.
Why not use a expandable cherry picker or a solid beam/lamanated beam ???
A frame is much more versitile especially in pulling engines out of big (tall) boats. I also use mine when I take a boat off trailer to hold one end up. Cherry pickers have clearance problems with low trailers too.
That is why I use a 4"x10" beam, one extra support and a chain hoist. That is the first mod I do to a garage.

Hey Mike, I knew you were going to say that. how tall did you make it, I was thinking 10 or 12 feet. 8 feet just doesn't seem high enough, also how wide did you make it and did it have wheels. :coffeycup v-drive
