Okay which is the better big block chevy the 454 or 427? and is it true you can make a 427 out of a 396 crank and stroke the 454 if you wanted to?

    A 427 and a 454 has the same bore 4.250, the 396 has a 4.094 bore! 396-427 has a 3.76 stroke, the 454 has a 4.00 stroke!..No substitute for cubic inches!. Costs the same to build a 427 or a 454!..

The 427 & 454 are the same bore. 4.250. The 396 and 427 share the same stroke, and the cranks are somewhat interchangable. Most of the 427 were forged, some 396 were forged, most 427 were cross drilled, most 396 we not. If you put a 427/396 crank in a 454 block you would get 427 cu in. If you put a 454 crank in a 427 block, you would get 454 cu in. There are so many different BBC blocks that space here stops me. There are BBC blocks than can be bored to the moon, and others that can't. See Mortec.com for a list of the casting #s with a description of what it is. ie; 2 bolt 4 bolt etc. There are also many heads to choose from, as well as rods, pistons etc. all from the factory. And thats just the MK IV series!!!Moneypitt

i think that depends on that particular block, some are real thin and obviously cannot be bored much at all and lots have core shift. Best thing to do is have it sonic checked to see how much material you have in the first place, After you get that sonic check you can take that to your machine shop and see if they can run the boring bar down the center of your material. I personally would not go past .060 over if your making any kind of power.

I always thought that the 427 had more horsepower and more low end than any big block.

In the chevrolet specs. In 1967 The 427 had 435 horse stock. The 454 had 275 horses in 1972. I know I am comparing different years but they only made 427's for a few years.

See what you can find on the '70 454. Is a 502 create motor beyond your means?

Don't forget that 427's were internally balanced as opposed to the externally balanced 454.
This means that there are different balancers and flywheels for each.
