I never knew what a "RAT" motor was..... I thought it was a racing class. Where did this nickname come from? What EXACTLY does it mean?
Something to do with the small block being called the mouse, so the big brother was named the rat, hemi's were called elephants cus they were so wide.

The 427 Chevy was actually thought to have been "dubbed" the Rat Motor back in 1962-1963 Era as Chevrolet's Mystery engine. The name had something to do with noise the engine makes as in a high pitched scream as I remember. Maybe Junior Johnson had something to do with the name. I don't know about rat's screaming but a big block chevy certainly does. I think the "mouse" name naturally was given to the small block after that.
