HP being equal, if you had to choose between a Merc or Volvo, which one would you choose and why?
I have run a Volvo 270 drive on my 21 foot V-Bottom, with a 350cid Chevy, with head work and 2.02 in 1.60 ex valves, flat top pistons, cam, edelbrock intake, Holley 650 double pumper, and sadly, I broke the drives main shaft running from the shift gears to the lower unit. I broke two shafts and after that, I had a larger diameter shaft made, and it is okay. The trim system of the old 270 was a headache.
However, I replaced the 270 with a Merc 228 outdrive and it is better as parts are so easy to come by, even way out here in the Philippines. I also love the way it shifts, and of course, the hydraulic trim.
