You have square port open chamber heads, 118cc chambers...... http://free.***boat.net/ubb/cool.gif
I pulled the valve cover off and found this cast on the inside head surface: HI-PERF and G272990. What does this say about the head, if anything? Thanks.

Thanks, Gofast. I assume that's good since I've heard good things about the older open-chamber heads. Are these the best cast iron heads I could have ended up with?
Timer, those heads are still available through Chevy under part #6260482. The GM Performance Parts catalog states "This is Chevrolet's best cast iron cylinder head for high-performance big block V-8's"
Thanks, OLDSQUIRT.
Try, WWW.MorTec.com (http://WWW.MorTec.com) for more info on your heads and other chevy stuff... it gives you casting numbers

Yes, they are the best factory iron heads...
Damm, I thought the 049's were the best G.M. Heads????
That's a slick site, BlownChevy. Thanks.
I guess my "G" is really a "6".
I found the quote in the catalog to which OLDSQUIRT refers. It mentions that the exhaust ports are square. When I took off the Bassetts on one side, I noticed the ports were round. Could it be that there has been some grinding done to go from square to round? Seems like that's the only explanation.
They are square at the intake side, exhaust ports are round.
