If you know where he went to school you might try the school's web site to get leads to reunion committtes, alumni associations, that sort of thing. Same thing if he belongs to any professional organizations and such -- they might be able to put you in contact with him.
Finally, the pay sites (for example, http://www.usa-people-search.com/) only charge around $10 to get somebody's last known addresses if you hit a dead end.
