Maybe the information I had was wrong, but the CO2 doesn't keep it carbonated, it is used to push the beer through the tap. Yes, its the same CO2 in the beer, but if the keg is flat, you can hook up 100 bottles to it, and it will still be flat.

This is true, but a keg using CO2 to pump won't go flat, where as a keg with air, ie. a hand pump, will go flat fast.

nope, CO2 will help keep it fresh and sudsy. If you pump air in the keg, co2 in the beer will equilabrate with the air and loose co2 in the beer (osmosis/diffusion.) Pumping co2 into the keg keeps the co2 in the beer, so to speak. also co2'd kegs do go flat, it just takes a couple of months.
