Thread: Thru hull transducer question

I bought a combo GPS/fishfinder this last winter. I installed all but the transducer. My boat came with a through hull all ready for the dash. They mounted it at an angle in the bottom of the boat. The new one stated it would work upto a 15 degree angle. My deadrise is 21. So I thought about putting it in a strake. Does anyone see a problem with this? I then need to make a fairing block for the inside. What should I make it out of. I thought about forming and pouring resin. Plastic, Epoxy covered wood. Does anyone know what would be best. Any recommendations before I drill a 2" hole in the bottom of my boat?

I didn't want to drill a hole in my hull and I didn't want the extra drag so I epoxied it to the inside of the hull. You lose about 30% of your maximum range but I've never noticed it being a problem. Of course, my lake is only 125 feet max depth and there were times on Lake Okanagan I lost the bottom but I'm pretty sure that lake is over 1000 feet deep in places and that's way beyond the specified range of my depth finder.
The point being, if you don't mind sleightly reduced maximum depth detection, just epoxy it to the inside of the hull. It has to sit in a bed of epoxy, there can be no air bubbles.

Are you using as just a depth guage? I wonder if you would lose much detail for a fishfinder. Like bottom definition and fish size. Do not know. The only time I fish is at Powell chasing the stripers.
