I didn't want to drill a hole in my hull and I didn't want the extra drag so I epoxied it to the inside of the hull. You lose about 30% of your maximum range but I've never noticed it being a problem. Of course, my lake is only 125 feet max depth and there were times on Lake Okanagan I lost the bottom but I'm pretty sure that lake is over 1000 feet deep in places and that's way beyond the specified range of my depth finder.
The point being, if you don't mind sleightly reduced maximum depth detection, just epoxy it to the inside of the hull. It has to sit in a bed of epoxy, there can be no air bubbles.
