Thread: TBird - BBF = With a Little Help From My SAWZALL

Up until yesterday, every motor that was pulled out of one of my vehicles was eventually going to go back into it. And so you had to be careful: bag and tag all the bolts, careful not to smash the windshield when hoisting the engine, etc.
Not the case with this '69 T-Bird. I picked it up specifically for harvesting the motor and trans (a 429 Thunderjet with C9VE heads, C9VE block and C6 trans).
So I just cut up the beater-bodied car and yanked out the drivetrain in one big piece. Took just a couple of hours from beginning to end!
Car started out complete and fully operational:

Then I just removed the grill, radiator and a/c core and whipped out the ol' SawzAll and cut the core support away.

Hoses, wiring and other connections to the powerplant were basically cut with a razor knife or dykes, and then the motor mounts, tranny mounts and driveshaft were unbolted and the whole damn drivetrain came out in one piece:

Oilah! Powerplant is in the garage and the body goes to the crusher (note sawed-up exhaust under the car).

Without the trusty SawZall, the whole operation would have probably taken double the amount of time, maybe more. And lowering the C6 onto my chest probably would have crushed me.
    Thanks SawZall!

A torch. Done that twice. Yeah, a friend of mine that worked in a wrecking yard told me that he used to tip cars on their side with a forklift and then take a cutting torch to the motor and tranny mounts and let the motor just fall out!

man you even drag the driveshaft out of the car.LOL.Yep, didn't even drain engine or tranny oil. So the driveshaft had to stay in the tranny's tail shaft as a "plug."
Of couse, the driveshaft has since been cut (just aft of the u-joints) by the SawzAll!
