    ok my saga goes on
found out yesterday that my SBC 350 has a cracked
    block, #3 cylinder.
    now
do I go the cheap route and find another block and change everything out
    or
pony up and go with a strocker 383
diff in funds would be about 3 g's
thanks guys...kind of already know the answers.

If you want to blow the money go for the 383.If you want to get on the water cheap get a new GM 350 260hp crate engine they were $1500. last I checked.Just make sure to install brass freeze plugs if it dont already have them in there.

    Sand Dawg,
Joeys Engines in Houston, Tx. 350 Long Block 800.00 and I believe they have a one year warranty. All the garages I know of use them. Very reputable company. Talk to them. I dont think shippin would be but about 150.00

To tell you the truth, I would rather get a good replacement block and spend my upgrade money on heads. The difference in performance per dollar from going to a 383 and puting better heads on the 350, I think you would go much better with the heads on the 350 and be able to use the good parts that you already have. Just my opinion.

    this is the complete
    opposite of what I was
    expecting
and what would be a good set of heads
    to use?

I put good heads on a 350 but I wish they were on a 383. You can't beat cubic inches.

    I'm with ya Dawg,
    I'd a though a 383 vs a 350 would have been a no braing

The engine builder I have used down here has built alot of 383's for 4 X 4. He calls them stump pullers. He said they alot of torque. From what I've learned, torque is where its at in a boat.

It depends on what you have in the existng motor, and what you want to do with the boat.
If the budget is tight and you have good parts in the existing block, then getting a new block might be the way to go. If you have the extra $ and you feel the need for speed, then there's no substitute for cubic inches.
If your going to do the stroker deal, make sure you get a GOOD crank and go the extra $ for forged pistons.
You can always do the heads later if the budgets tight, but you don't want to have to pull the motor to make the short block right.
    Just my 2 cents!!

I know a 383 is a stump puller, and the price tag is
up there, add a zero to the 383 and your almost there.
Would a very well built 350 almost run as good, almost,
and be easier on the pocket if I had a lot of the left
    over parts still available?
