Del51, good point. But instead of flame arrestors which can be restrictive try a small K&N filter. Air buffeting across the carb can really screw up air/fuel metering.
I am currently running velocity stacks with k & n filters. No scoop. A lot of good information here. Looks like I have a couple of different options. thanks for your help. 058 I like your idea on the second inlet. That will be one of the first things I do.
My bet is on spark chek your electrical system then shortin your plug gap.
