    Shaun,
What is your opinion of the measuring tools you bought from Summit?
As long as you don't mind, I would sure like to see these guys comments on the board - I've got a lot to learn.
I'm thinking of putting my engine back together myself. I've always had it done by the guy that does the machining, since I didn't have the tools and it was only a couple hundred bucks for him to assemble the short block. Maybe it's time for me to buy the tools and give it a try.
    Brian
Honestly i cant say, from what i've learned by browsing there site is that many of the products they stamp there name on looks to be the product of another. For example if you search for dial bore you'll see the first 2 products look exactly the same just one says it's a summit brand and other other says tavia. I am happy with the micrometer set i bought which is also summit brand (not that i have much experience with other brands) but the dial bore gauge I'm not too sure about. I basically got different measurements using plastigauge than i did with the gauge so I'm not sure what to believe. Maybe i can take the gauge to a machine shop and have them test it against one of there's... Or maybe Fiat will be nice enough to let me ship it to him to compare against his expensive guage
I was thinking today as i was buying more tools to do my rail kit mock up that the money I've been spending in tools i could have probably just used to pay a shop to do the labor... but then again I'm making a investment and i want to build other engines, besides wheres the fun and pride in that (No offence to any of you guys who dont build them yourself )

Well the saga finally continues... I've been busy these last few months with work and personal drama... I'm finally continuing where i left off. I wiped out the bores with laquar thiner and paper towels and used the total seal stuff. That stuff is trippy, reminds me of graphite. Installed the rings on the pistons, slid them in using my POS ring compressor and torqued them to 50lbs per ARP using there lub. Cam is lubed up and installed and tomorrow i plan to degree the cam... we'll see how well that goes...

I just about f'd things up from the start, i torqued the first 3 pistons using 50 newton meters!!! My torque wrench has both newton meters and foot pounds... Lucky i realized this and corrected it. My solution was to put some tape over the newton meters readout so that i wouldnt mess up again. Some of you other guys out there may want to do this if you have a wrench that shows both! Simple mistake that probably wouldnt have caused failure i'm sure... 50 newton meters is only like ~30 foot lbs.

    Shaun,
Good job. Like said before it is great to see a young guy taking initiative & building his own deal.
    Keep us updated.

Shaun, looks like it is going together well. Keep taking your time and make sure you don't overlook anything and it will be everything you could ask for. Also let us know how the total seal stuff works for you. I have never used it as I have me own method for assembly, but would love to hear how quickly the rings break in with that stuff.

Got a bit more time to work on the motor today. First i installed the windage tray which was a mistake, oil pump needs to go on first ... After i got the oil pump and windage tray in i went ahead and did a finaly cleaning to the surface of the block and heads and installed my ARP head studs. Here is where i messed up again... With the BBC head studs when just glancing at the studs it looks like there are only 2 lengths... Well thats not true, there are 3 lengths ( i hope there wasnt anymore ). 2 of these lengths are pretty close to the same, one is about 1/4" to 1/2" shorter... There looks to be 4 of these and the went in the holes that the dowls went into... If i'm wrong about this sombody let me know!! haha... ANyway i used RTV on the threads that went into the block to seal the studs.. I used arp molly and torqued the heads to 65lbs in 10lbs increments. I also used cometic head gaskets and installed the dry.. Thats about as far as i got today, figured before i continued on i would get your input!

Not sure about this one.. i bought arp oil pump shaft (think it was arp, might be melling, would have to dig through my wrappers) it has a steel sleeve but the sleeve doesnt clip onto the oil pump shaft. the sleeve is part of the shaft so it doesnt allow the shaft to fall throguh the block because it's big but as you can see in the pic, when the block is unside down it drops down a bit. I know when the dist is in it wont matter really but i just wanted to get input on this..
