Thread: Prop shaft question?

I have a stainless prop shaft, not sure about grade of material(304, 316, ect.). My problem is that the shaft is bent out of tolerance. Can the shaft be straightened or not? Has anyone done this before? Should I just purchase a new shart? Thanks for any info.

Standard propshafts are usually 303 stainless. Don't try to have it straighten, its not worth the chance of it failing. If this were a low performance boat or a cabin cruiser where shaft rpm isn't very high then you might consider having it straighten if the run-out isn't too bad.

Save yourself a lot of grief, get a new one!!..If you plan on putting power to it, get a Monel or AquaMet shaft!...Be safe.....
