There isn't enough money in the Scenic Highway Fund pool to mitigate the problems on that stretch. At least not for only 2 miles of road.
The instability of the cliffs above that portion of roadway would require several millions of dollars to shore up. Without eliminating the rock slide hazard the northbound lane would continually get bombarded.
We've abandoned that stretch as a roadway, and plan to block off the eastern (northbound) lane with concrete barriers down the middle of the road. We'll open the southbound lane to bicycle and foot traffic, as part of the re-alignment of Riverside Drive from Hwy 95 at Lakeside to Buckskin Park. The re-alignment includes a bike path along the entire length of Riverside Drive.
We'll also add day-use amenities, such as picnic tables, ramadas, & restrooms along that stretch.
