...not required here in MI but in TN it is - I think. Any "stumbling blocks" getting a policy other than the OT headers? what is the best way to handle THAT particular issue "issue" too ?

I just recently insured my boat in CA -
size, hp, and top speed are now a bigger deal too. I have an 18' flatty, 750 HP, +100 mph. Had to fudge the numbers to 300 HP, and top speed of 60 mph - which is possible. Set rev limiter to 4500 rpm and retard the timing!
OT headers is tough. They just started clamping down on them. You can tell them you don't have them (unless they want a picture), but you run the risk of getting cancled if you have a claim for someone getting burned. Also, if you fudge on speed numbers and have a claim that includes higher speed than claimed, count on being cancled.
Progressive cancled a policy and refused to pay the claim on a guy with a Skater with twin 300's. He had a highspeed crash (over 100 mph) and tried to put a claim in. He had insured it as an 80 MPH top speed boat. Progressive might pursue an insurance fraud suit with the guy also.
The OT headers are tough because women get burned and then get plastic surgery and pain & suffering, along with a lawyer can hit 1 million easily.
I was upfront with my agent about everything. He recognized I was a resposible boater with many years experience, and he knew several people who knew me and vouched for my driving. I put through transom exhaust on for the pic's, but my agent told me not to tell him if I did any upgrades, like OT headers. But, if I did try to make a claim for burns due to OT headers, he would expect I would be cancled.

WHAT is the deal with those OT headers??......NEVER used any(until now - I have a boat going together) but if the system is operating properly WHY should someone GET burned?
UNLESS you sit idleing for 10 minutes or so and THEN someone touches them.....????

Just a little info that I've heard from one the the top dogs at Progressive. Applys to all insurance co.s this coming year he says. No one of the standard carriers we all know will be insuring anything with any type of OT exhaust, be it headers or otherwise. A few lawsuits have been awarded recently and the average 3rd degree burn cost the insurance co 100K to settle. Also any misrepresentation of any kind with regards to top speed, horsepower, or value is grounds for claims to not be paid and policies cancelled.
I've posted on this subject elsewhere recently. If interested in more info just search on insurance. Just passing on what I've heard.
A side note on headers, depending on how much water is injected they can be hot enough to remove skin even though the chrome isn't blue. If someone actually falls into a header and can't get off quickly, that's when you'll have a 3rd degree burn problem in short order and unfortunately it won't be up to the boat owner whether he gets sued.

Hey HolyMoly, did you get your insurance through Progressive?Sorry for the delayed reply,
I don't use progressive as they won't insure my boat.
I use Gary Cann in El Segundo (State Farm). Many people use Gary. The insurance game has changed quite a bit this year. If you have an existing policy, then probably did not notice too much in the way of changes, but they have really clamped down accross the board for new policies.
Gary had no problem a year ago with insuring a blown akly hydro. But, the underwriting as I said, has changed the requirements. The insurance underwriters are not that hungry for new boat business at this time, and a few major claims can change the whole game like with OT headers and high speed crashes.
    Gary's number is 310-322-2888
My insurance is $612 year with the following coverage:
    1972 Mandella 18' flatbottom v-drive - 350HP
Boat and Trailer valued at $20,000
    Comp/Collision/Unisured/liability $500,000
    Deductible $1,000
