Driver Crashes Ferrari Enzo On PCH
Sheriff Says Car Could Have Been Going Up To 200 MPH

MALIBU, Calif. -- A speeding Ferrari whose driver may have been racing crashed Tuesday on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, prompting the closure of the roadway and an investigation to determine who was behind the wheel, officials said.

Paramedics sent to PCH at Decker Road about 6:15 a.m. treated one person at at the scene for a minor injury, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Ron Haralson.
That man, whose name was not immediately released, told authorities he was the owner of the Ferrari Enzo, but claimed that he was the passenger and that the driver ran off after the crash.
"The fact (is) that the passenger is the registered owner of the vehicle, from the Beverly Hills-Bel Air area. The passenger had blood on his mouth and both airbags on the car deployed, but only the driver's side airbag had blood on it, not the passenger side," said Sgt. Phillip Brooks.
As of late Tuesday morning, there had been no arrests in the case, according to the watch commander at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.
The Ferrari Enzo, a limited-edition vehicle worth between $600,000 and $1 million, has a published top speed of 225 mph.
"We have the passenger, who told us the driver did flee from the scene," Brooks said. "And we... followed some footprints up the side of the hill in an effort to locate the driver."
Authorities believe the Ferrari "was traveling at least 100 mph and it will probably be a lot more than that once we conclude our investigation," Brooks said.
Authorities said the driver of the Ferrari might have been racing a motorist in a Mercedes Benz.
The impact sheared the Ferrari in half, with the entire front section separated from the rest of the vehicle.
"For a million dollars, you get a very good passenger-safety system, and apparently in this case it did work," Brooks said.
Some electrical service was interrupted in the area after a power pole was struck by the car. At least one lane of PCH remained closed late Tuesday morning while crews worked to replace the damaged pole.

Jury Deadlocks In Ferrari Crash Case Fraud Trial
LOS ANGELES, November 3, 2006 - A mistrial was declared Friday in the fraud and grand theft trial of a Swedish businessman who gained worldwide notoriety when he wrecked a classic Ferrari sports car in a spectacular pre-dawn crash on Pacific Coast Highway last February.

Judge Patricia Schnegg declared the mistrial and dismissed the jury minutes after jurors told her they were deadlocked 10-2 in favor of convicting Bo Stefan Eriksson.
The jurors, who had deliberated just a little more than a day, announced shortly after 11 a.m. that deliberations had broken down, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
Eriksson, 44, was charged with two counts each of grand theft and fraudulent concealment with intent to defraud. Prosecutors said he stopped making payments on and tried to hide two luxury sports cars he had borrowed millions of dollars to lease.
Eriksson had previously pleaded no contest to a drunk driving charge in connection with the Feb. 21 crash that split in two a rare Ferrari Enzo valued at $1.5 million. He still faces trial on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm - a .357-Magnum handgun that authorities said they found when they searched his $6 million Bel-Air home in March.
Eriksson was not charged with stealing the red Enzo he destroyed but of taking two other classic sports cars that prosecutors said he acquired in England through a series of sham transactions. After shipping the cars, a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and a black Ferrari Enzo, to the U.S. last year, authorities said Eriksson stopped making payments on the vehicles and disappeared.
The defense acknowledged during the trial that Eriksson quit making payments on the cars late last year. But defense attorney Jim Parkman said he did so only after his company went broke, not because he intended to steal the cars. He had been an executive with now-defunct Gizmondo, a European videogame company
