GLAMIS — A 24-year-old San Diego man died of an apparent drowning near here Saturday morning while riding his off-highway vehicle, marking the second OHV death in the desert since Wednesday night.
The man, whose name was withheld by the Imperial County CoronerÂ’s Office, was riding his 2004 Yamaha Quad westbound within the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Area at 6:35 a.m. Saturday, according to a California Highway Patrol officials.
After approaching the east edge of the Coachella Canal at 10 miles per hour, the victim drove over the east access road and directly into the canal. Authorities believe the driver simply failed to see the canal.
It was determined that the victim survived the initial accident, but drowned before emergency help could rescue him.
