Thread: Up the river without a treadmill

    Ground/river bank speed=50
    River/water speed = 70
Speed is relative to surroundings, ground speed, air speed, water speed. Air speed, even 1000 MPH at altitude, is a none event as there is nothing to relate the speed to, ground sped, you can see the ground coming at you, (or leaving if you're facing to the rear), and the same applies to water speed, but now the water is coming towards you, not stationary, so it seems like you have an 80 MPH jetboat, but the river bank speed (relative) feels like 60MPH. This explains why most jetboats on ebay say they will go 80. Its all relative to the surroundings.........MP
    Yes, the MFer will FLY

    Good point , thanks Moneypitt,
    Speed measured with GPS
An Everglade Airboat with a full throttle speed of 50mph on a calm lake, is now traveling up a river against a 20mph current. How fast is the airboat going up river at full throttle?

Now I've got to go find the drag co efficient of "a", (which I assume means any) airboat........Based on a totally flat bottom it would seem that those airboats run pretty dry once up to speed, so the opposing current would have little or no effect on the speed, no rudder in the water to drag it down, (oh, is there any wind on the river that wasn't on the lake?) I'm betting it would be within 2% of the same speed. (unless there is a hidden conveyer, or a flat tire somewhere in this question)......What do I win?.................MP

    You've Won,
A brand new Yugo, this is the automobile of choice for environmentalists & MPG conscious consumers. Also a favorite of those who would love to give OPEC a big one finger salute! Owners of these cars have reported over 200 trips to the corner liquor store on just one tank of gas! That's right, a whole week on one tank!
