I have little fold down T-style cleats on the inside of the gunwales on my jet. One set are just in front of the front seats and the other are back in the engine compartment. Really don't even notice they're there.

Since it already had cleats on it (lovely blue anodized POS's), I'm putting 4 new ones on. You have a wide selection to choose from..... I'm putting old school cleats on that fit the era of my Stevens.

DScott, been thinking about putting some on my Cheyenne too.
I also thought about putting them inside the Gunnels, but think about a rope dragging back and forth across your new paint as it moves around on the waves & swells.

This weekend I am doing the last bit of restoration and modification to my dad's Sanger before he comes down on the 18th and I surprise him.
I am installing 4 cleats on the boat so he can tie it off easier to his dock. He had throat cancer and now has a trache tube in his neck so water isn't exactly his friend if he were to fall in the lake from trying to tie off from the bow eye or the stern. I actually thought about mounting them on the inside of the gunnel (similar to the passenger grab handle)so they don't take away from the lines of the hull. 2 cleats next to the front seats and 2 back in engine compartment gunnels. Cleats are a must for my fathers safety.
    What do you guys think?
They do make some that collapse and are flush when not in use. If you have to do it thats the way to go inside the gunwhales.
