I have the Panasonic TH-50PX600U 50-Inch HDTV and love it.But if I was you I would get the extended warrantee.I have one but never used it.Shop cost for a Plasma is way up there.
Both DVI and HDMI will deliver a digital signal from your source (DVD player, HD receiver, etc.) resulting in a superior quality digital picture. However, an HDMI cable carries both the sound signal and the picture, while DVI delivers only a picture signal (primary difference between HDMI and DVI).
Now, if you are integrating your plasma with a surround-sound system, you will not likely listen to the sound through your tv anyway; however, if you are not going to use an auxilory sound system, then HDMI will allow you to run sound to your plasma tv without requiring a separate cable.

We rarely use the TV speakers for anything. Everything is piped through the surround system, including PS2. All of that stuff is RCA conns and I'm guessing thats the best (simplest) way to continue for now.
I would not bother with DVI, TV's might still have one of these connections, but they are dying a slow death. Go with a TV with HDMI.
As the HD DVD's come out if you want to see them in the best quality it will be with the HDMI
Here is what I am looking at for the master bedroom.
Panasonic TH-42PH9UK 42" Professional Series HD Plasma Display with up to 10,000:1 Contrast Ratio. I have seen this monitor for around 1200 bucks. It gives you many more menu options than the consumer TVs.
This is a monitor only. No speakers, tuner or stand. I will wall mount it and connect it to my Yamaha RX-V 2600 receiver that up-converts all standard def and 480P to 720P and 1080i. I will only have to run one cable (DVI) to the TV in the wall. The receiver will distribute all my video via HDMI (I will need a HDMI/DVI cable for this) from all other sources. I haven't decided on speakers yet.

I have the same Panasonic as Hotshoe, great unit. Some of the most brillant HD stuff is on HDnet 1 and 2 and HD movies.
Just so you know, HD requires at least 1280x720 for HD and plasmas below 50 can't resolved 1280x720.
