Thread: C4 bellhousing identification

I am putting a C4 behind the 5.0L I am building for my Ranger. I read that it is much better to use a car bellhousing than a truck bellhousing for floorpan clearance. A guy at work told me he had a C4 he'd give me, and snapped a couple pictures of it for me. I had also read that post-1970 trannies are better, but did not find out why. If anyone here can tell what this, and if it will work for me, let me know. It would be rebuilt with a high stall converter.

It looks like a 302 bell housing. There is a difference between C3 and C4 in that the C4 has more frictions than a C3. But if it came off of a V8 then it should be a C4. Put a shift kit in it. But now I haven't messed with one for over ten years, so I am not going to rely on memory for details, lol.

It is definately a C4 for a 302, the question is if it is for a 157 or 164 tooth bellhousing. Apparently the 157 tooth fits like a glove, and the 164 tooth requires a sledgehammer to clear the floorpan. Someone that owns a transmission shop might know all the little differences to identify it, but I haven't been able to.
I would definately put a shift kit in it... actually been thinking about going full-manual reversed valvebody, but not sure.
