he can drive the F450 legaly with a class "C". if he pulls a 5th wheel trailer over 10,000# but under 15,000# he will need a restriction 41 added to his class "C" license. if he tows a 5th wheel over 15,000# he will need to get a non comercial class "A".

What if the truck is say 16,600#s (just putting out that #) and his 5th wheel is 10,000. That puts his GCWR at 26600. So would he need more than a class C, or am I reading all this wrong..
BTW... His 40' weekend warrior is going to put him way over 10,000 (more like 20,000) so his Combined will be around 30,000 to 35,000. Just trying to get all the info I can incase I get stopped as well..

his truck will weight around 9,000#. (unladen wieght) so without pulling anything he can drive the truck with the class"C". once he hooks up that 20,000# 5th wheel, he then will need a non commercial class"A".
understanding the differances of unladen wieght, VWR, GVWR, and GCWR is the key. as to your question with a 16,600# vehicle, i would have to look that up to see if the truck itself needs a differant class drivers license. if i remember correctly, it would depend on wether the vehicle is classed as a commercial vehicle, or recreational vehicle. for instance bus type motorhomes have some exemptions to lets say a passenger carrying bus. so lets say the tow vehicle you mention that weighs 16,600# and is still in the class"C" catagory, then when the 5th wheel that weighs 10,000# is connected he would then need the restriction 41 endorsement. because the trailer is under the 15000# limit. but if that 16,000# truck has a GCWR of less than 26,600# (doubtfull) he would then be over weight for the combined rating and be illegal. no matter what class drivers license he carries.
now from what i gather, the 08 F450 has a GCWR of 33,000# (properly equiped) with lets say a 9,000# unladen wieght.meaning the trailer (and all its load and load in the truck) can be as much as 24,000#. and can be legally driven with a non commercial class"A" when towing.
