Thread: What should final timing w/ a MSD 6BTM box be?

I wanted to know what you guys were setting your MSD 6BTM box at. I have a BBC 468 ci w/ forged 8:1 pistons. Valves are 2.19 & 1.88 S.S. Cam is from Crane, Intake .544/238 degrees Duration, Exhaust .567/248 Duration, all w/114 degrees lobe seperation. The Blower is an 871 w/ 2 Holley 750's running 6 psi at 5000 rpm. The timing is set at 32 degrees full advance. With the 6BTM dial set around 2 the box takes over around 4500 rpm and sets the final timing to 24 degrees advance. I have set the dial around 1 and there is a 300 rpm gain, I'm sure the final advance is closer to 28-30 degrees. I just wanted to know what others with a 6BTM box were doing and what timing those without a boost retard system set timing at. Thanks Mike

I run my timing at 32 degrees locked. No curve or advance itÂ’s always at 32 degrees. Blown motors like lots of timing down low this will give you more torque on the bottom end.

I too run my timing locked at 32deg.
    8-71 490cuin 5500 7lbs boost intercooled.
    pump gas all the way.

I run 32 to 34 degrees total. Not locked but all in by 2000rpm. 6AL box no timing retard under boost. Blowers like advanced timing down low but will kill the motor at high RPM. Mine never will see over 6000rpm. To much much retard or not enough total timing will or can drive your exhaust temps through the roof also. Oh yea I run 5psi boost on 91 pump gas.

The boost timing is for engines that are above the norm. I went your route and spent countless hours figuring out why I did not make power. On an Ideal setup it retards your ignition .5 degrees per pound of boost. usaually the nob is adjustable from 1-15. The engine I tried it on made 11 pounds of boost and the smallest degree per pound was 1 degree. I was 11 degrees retarded from full advance at full power. The key is having enough initial timing, know when your full advance comes in. On the smallest setting it was not good.Msd said I could reduce the retard funtion with a resistor they offered. It went in the junk pile.I made more power wih the standard red box and set the timing right.
