Thread: Pump Question

I have a '78 bahner that I am rebuilding a engine for. While the motor is out I am doing some fiberglass work as well.
The pump is a stock berkeley and has never been touched. Anything I can do to ensure it is ready to hit the lake again?

Pull it apart and check for clearances. If its tight then run it, if the clearances are out then re-build it. Nice thing about a pump is it is a relatively simple animal.

Spin the shart by hand, feel for anything that is nor smoothness, any play (other than end-play) in the shaft, at either end (with the bowl still on). With the bowl off, the shaft will wiggle a bit, from tolerance play in the thrust bearing. ANY roughness in the thrust bearing is grounds for immediate replacement, DO NOT RUN WITH A BAD THRUST BEARING. It CAN destroy an impeller, a suction housing, a crankshaft, and an engine block if it lets the shaft slide fwd.

for a couple hundred bucks for a pump kit, I'd just go ahead and rebuild it or send it to someone. I think the peace of mind knowing it's done would be worth it.
If you do decide to rebuild it yourself, make sure you at least have someone check the shaft and impeller. Posting pics of those items here would be very beneficial to get some input on their condition.

presumably, if the engine needed a rebuild the pump will soon follow. The pump book calls for a rebuild at 300 hours. You really don't want to energetically disassemble the pump with a new engine.

There was about 250hours on the boat. The block cracked through a water jacket. Perfect opportunity for a 4bolt with square heads I think!
I know nothing about pumps. I have looked around through the threads looking at pictures and reading advice given for others. I dont want to get midway through the summer and have the pump go out and/or damage the new motor.
Up until the motor cracked, the boat ran great. I did not notice any problems with the pump (that I could see with my untrained eye).
I went out the the boat and spun the shaft. I was very suprised at how easy it was to spin. The first few rotations I could hear a faint grind but after that it spins freely and smoothly with ease. (the boat sat in the delta for 3 weeks before I found the problem and could arrange a tow to my marina. I am assuming the grinding was calcification or build up from the very fertile water on the impeller.)
Are rebuilds difficult for a newbie with pumps?

Getting the impeller nut and the impeller off is probably the hardest part. Once you get the impeller out, you will be able to measure it and the wear ring for clearances. Here's a couple of pics of my pump when I first got the boat- you can see the dings in the impeller, nothing major but still not a real good thing. You can also see a groove in the shaft about 1/2" back from the threads. Rather than dicking around, I just got a new shaft and impeller.

here's another view of the impeller-

Here's a pic of measuring the impeller and in the following pic you will see the wear ring. You need to measure the ID of the wear ring to find out the clearance.

I took mine down to Jet Boat Performance and had them do the work....it was way too cold this past winter to be working on the boat outside
