Have a question for you all. I am looking to buy an older model 1996-98 4runner to comute back and forth to the OC from san diego. I was wondering if you out there that own them can give some scoop on the differences in power and gas milage between the 4 cycl and 6 cycl.
    thanks

The 2.4L or 2.7L 4-cyl is more reliable than the 3.0/3.4L 6 (I have owned both 4 and 6) but I would not hesitate to buy a 6 if you can get a good deal. You will be happier with the 6 power wise. The early 6 had head gasket issues so stay away from early 1990s v-6 Toyotas. You will be fine with 1996+. The 4 is a dog but it is bullet proof. I would say a well-maintained 4 will get you 250k+ miles easy where a 6 might get you 180k to 200k. If you get a 4 with over 100k on the clock, have a quality new timing chain set and tensioner(sp) done and you will get over 300k. The 22R/RE (4-cyl) usully dies from a thrown timing chain. You can hear when they start to go because the chain will knock/rub the timimg cover when you first start the motor. The motor timing tensioner works off of oil pressure so it takes a minute to tighten up.
Mileage is pretty similar because the 4 is always on the floor. Check www.fueleconomy.gov to get specs on anything as far as MPG goes.

That's what I was going to say...lol Also, there is a huge difference between the 2 and 4wd.. I can go to vegas or phoenix from San Marcos on one tank in my 2wd(96 sr5 6cyl), while the 4wd(99 limited) takes about a tank and a 1/3...
