I used a 2hp 13 gallon. I always let it catch up. Wasn't too bad cuz I painted the sides & top only. Set your gun up right to make sure you aren't over pressurizing the paint and you will get better coverage. There are some good websites on this...

If you are using an HVLP gun, you will be using alot of CFM. My Devilbiss 620 uses around 15 cfm. Our shop 10hp 120gal compressor kicks on every 2-3 minutes. A good gun uses boocoo air.
If you are going to be doing more painting, I would say 5.0-6.5hp, 80 gal tank. If you can get a hold of someone's old compressor that is shot, you can use the tank. If you plumbed a 60, 80, or 120 gal tank in-line with your current setup, it would give you alot more spraying time (surplus air).
what gun and tip did you use?and what were the suites?
When I was painting cars I used a Sharpe Razor HVLP gun. It sits in the bottom of my tool box . I also had some el-cheapo Harbor freight tube feed guns, one touch up, and one I called the garden hose LOL. I run my HVLP on a Craftsman compressor now, 10 gallon tank (can't remember the CFM) and it has no problems keeping up.
Specs on the Sharpe
Fluid Tip Size: 1.3mm.
Air Consumption: 13 cfm (wood can use 8cfm@40 or higher)
Max Inlet HVLP psi: 29
Air Inlet MPT: 1/4"
that all makes sence, the one i thru away was the ''chepo one'' from harbor freight.which one from harbor will work,or go elsewere?
I bought one off ebay. Probably the same thing at harbor Freight. Its not a professionals tool by any means, but it puts the paint down and if you practice with it a little, it does a good job.
spend the little extra bucks, and get a good HVLP. They spray so much better, and practice. Go get a fender at the wrecking yard, and practice painting it (if you have never painted before). I love my Sharpe it sprays consistant every time, and is easy to get parts, new tips etc for.
i've painted my share, however the one cheep o from harbor was junk, just wish the comp.would hold a constent preasure.
try www.eastwood.com they got a lot of body stuff at a good price.
