514 Ford MOtorsport Crate MOtor

I am thinking of buying a 514 Ford MOtotsport
crate motor for my v-drive. Ford claims the 514 makes 600 HP @ 6250 RPM and 590 LBS of Torque @ 4750 RPM. It has Cobra Jet Alum heads. THe 514 cost $6,800.00 plus shipping and I know I can not bulid a Ford or Chevy for that price. I currently have a 509 BOWTIE Chevy in my jet boat and never had a problem. Does anyone run the big cubic inch Ford? Is it worth buying?

Spectrabrent, I built a long rod 514 BBF for my Howard wood deck flat. It replaced a 466 [+.030] I've only run the engine once since I installed it and was easy on it when I did but I was happy with the results, pulled hard to 6200 [plate down-hull wet] Should easily turn 6800-7K off the plate. 25% gear/11.5x15 prop. So far I am happy with the new engine. If you go with a Ford crate engine get the optional Eagle rods that are available with the engine as the stock CJ/truck rods aren't up the the task for boat use. I have heard of a few engines kicking the stock rods out.

Do you know anything about the 460 Cobra Jet crate motor with Cobra Jet Alum heads. 486 HP @ 6150 and 480 LBS @ 4600 RPM.

Brent, What kind of engine is in your boat now? As I am sure you know exhaust systems get pretty pricy and the ford stuff is not as common as chevy. If your set-up for the blue oval the it sounds good to me. I would get that rod up grade too.

THe boat has a 460 Ford filled with sand. THe old owner never flushed the system after they used the boat. The stock exhaust is (Hardin). Gil makes Offshore exhaust for a Ford. You are right lots of $$$$. I dont think this boat will ever go real fast, I just want a nice running cruiser.

Oldsquirt, I use the stock Ford iron crank offset ground to 4.140", Eagle H beam rods and JE flat top pistons in a stock block that was 4 bolted with steel billet caps. It was bored .080" over to 4.440" The iron crank should be good to 7K+. Spectrabrent, I don't know too much about the 460 you cited but a good friend bought a complete crate 460/535 hp a few years ago for use in a car. It ran great and had plenty of power but in a car it isn't real world boat use. Another friend has a 514 he built in 1988 for use in a Texas Tunnel[?]. I went for a ride a couple of weeks ago, ran 6200 rpm with 1-4 bbl and a pair of A460 heads. I was impressed, jet boat? run like that?....Damn! and with an old motor too. I think you will like the performance of a 514. Crate engines seem a bit pricy to me but I build my own with parts I already have. This last 514 cost me about $3200.00 for the short block including machine work [the next one will be even cheaper] and I already had the CJ aluminum heads from the old 466. I don't know the price of that 460/486 but if you are starting from scratch it could be the best way to go if you have the mounts and the exhaust.

I do have the mounts & exhaust, the boat came with a 460 Ford. I could switch to the Chevy, but it would be too much work. I think a 514 Ford or 509 would be the same (power & speed). The boat may do 55 or 60 on a good day.

Brent ,as you know I've got the LS-6 in my 24 ,which has the TR2 intake ,holley 800 D/P,and that engine was rated at 450 HP in the 1970 Chevelle.Your 460 was rated 320 HP.I've got a 14/13-3 blade OJ cupped prop,and the boat leaps on plane with 4% overdrive on the Ace-drive, 55 MPH. With the crate motor you looking at ,you should be able to do similar speeds.You remember Trailer Boat did the test with the 320HP Ford setup for a conservative 45 MPH. Your XS is lower profiled than my XL and slightly lighter too.With proper prop it may go as high as 60.As you know I'm in the 13th year with my 429 in the jetboat,so don't shy away from the Ford since you've got all the marine stuff already to save some dough.
