I like paint and think a nice paint job is second to none. But I went gel for my lake boat. Why? Tie your vette up to a dock and have a few buddies walk across the hood a few times. Then you'll know why.
I know this is going to stir up some response.
But I have to ask.????
Why spend the money for gelcoating a restoration project. When the new urethane paints work just as well?
Its just like painting a Corvette.

Hey SD,
I have sanded and buffed ,both Gelcoat and a catalysied clear, they act the same to me.
Just wondering. I have painted Vettes and boats. Guess its all in how you take care of your toys. Also found a cheap way to help a fading metalflake boat. House of Kolor kandy colors work well. It is a tinted clear-coat.
Did a blue early 60's Howard. Turned out great and didnt have to add any more flake.
Gellcoat is tough stuff. I am building a 19 ft jet with all white gellcoat.I will use some nice candy colors on top, but will have that tough base underneath.
My buddy is restoring a '72 Biesemeyer ski-racer and is thinking about shooting it with dark purple metal flake on a black gel base. What do you guys think? I thought it kinda sounded bitchin' but we'd been drinking a few beers when we were discussing it. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

My own personal taste would be to ditch the metal flake and go with a fine metallic..........like a House of Kolors or PPG.
Don't put the girlfriend in the thong on the deck though........ http://www.plauder-smilies.com/devil/firedevil.gif
I agree. There are some awesome pearls and metallics avaiable these days. Check the House of Kolor charts at the local paint store. There are lots of new products. And there is always flake, but it now comes in several sizes and more colors.
I've been through 3 wives and a few girl friends, (not at the same time of course), with this old 72 Nordic and I'm thinking of painting or gel coating it.

It's baby poop green metal flake and orange. The sun has done a number on the deck over the years. The clear over the metal flake is worn down and the flake is starting to come through. The orange gel coat has faded as well. Can a clear gel coat be shot over the metal flake or is there no hope for saving it and I just need to paint it??? If so, who would you recommend to do that?

Guys,
My experience with spraying over gel coat and especially metal flake is that the surface underwater will bubble after sitting a week at the dock.
I used Imron which is a really hard epoxy paint and has held up well but as I say it's a blistered wreck underneath.
Maybe I should have used something else first below the water line to seal first.
Comments are welcome.
