Yes it CAN work, but it will not be optimum for a lake boat, the Bird flows so much air that the blower can not use all of it. What happens, is that the blower/engine combo will have as much air as it can use at around 1/2 throttle. The barrel valve to air flow ratio will be way off. It can work OK on a drag deal, but it will never be right on a lake deal. This also applies if it is converted to EFI, in that case the throttle position sensor output will be in error. What we , and others do is to weld in a partition between one of the outside throttle bores to keep air from flowing through one of the throttles. This has the effect of making the unit flow 1/3 less air and still look much cooler than the bug catcher, which is much smaller. If I remember correctly, a bird flows about 3200 cfm. That is enough for a BIG motor at 8000 rpm. Even a 565 motor at 10 lbs only needs a pair of 1050s or 1150s. At wide open throttle or idle it will be fine, the part throttle range is the problem with too large of hat. TIMINATOR

Man, I know a bunch of people running a bird on a 6/71 that have no complaints.....me being one.

Try borrowing a Bug catcher and then we can discuss it. We have loaned ours out many times and all but one guy wanted to buy it. Most bird setups have a "dead spot" at the upper end of the throttle range, this is from the engine having all the air it needs, and the barrel valve just allowing in more fuel that the engine doesn't require. The bird will work, but it is usually not optimum for any but an all out deal. There is a difference between optimum and "will it work". Glad you are happy with yours. TIMINATOR

Wouldn't the amount of air the 6/71 was pumping determine if the bird was the correct application?

Exactly, and what is sitting under the 6/71 is a big factor.

I am sure he is right that the bug would be better for part throttle use and about ample for about any motor one would want to feed. It has plenty of CFM.
