Thread: TRS prop size question

I have a 79 22' schiada with a trs out drive and a 21 pitch mirage prop with velvet drive. The motor is a 550 hp 502. Boat is new to me and i was told it did 98 at Elsinore at the drags (old owner was boat racer). Ive rebuilt the motor with more hp now and have only seen 56 mph on gps at 5000 rpms. He said he used a 24 pitch prop to achieve that speed . Does this sound right to anybody? I would like to see that 98 mph.

I don't doubt that your Schiada has done 98 mph. It didn't do it with 550 hp, though.

Here's your formula; rpm x pitch x ratio x .0009469 divided by slip = speed. If you don't know ratio, try 1.5 which was very common with that old drive. So you have 5000 x 24 x .67 x .0009469 = 76.1 less slip, maybe 15% average = 64.6. You can see you have some variable to fool around with, but this boat never did see anywhere close to 98 mph. Come up to at least 1200 hp, a lot more gear/pitch and OPPS, you can't do 1200 hp with a trs, at least for very long. So now you need a dry sump six drive and there goes the cost of boating.

    Thankyou for the info.

To get the most out of your set-up, loose the mirage and go to a Bravo-1 or Hydromotive Quad-4 24P 4/blade. Like to see pics of your ride. I am a Schiada owner also.

As a bit of a reference I have an '86 22' Schiada with a powerglide & a Speedmaster #4. It has a blown 468 BBC and I'm getting 75-80 mph. (non-gps) out of it with around 700hp and a 24 pitch 3 blade chopper. My tach bounces around so much I can only guess I was hitting around 5k or so.
How far up does your engine sit versus a normal bravo 1 setup? Mine is around 18" or so, pushing the weight much farther forward than normal - great for the rough stuff, bad for top speed and seating area.
Got any pics of your setup?

I will try to get some pics of it up tomorrow. I was kinda looking around at new drives today and saw the konrad trs replacement drives and the arneson surface drive. Which one do you guys think is the better one , that will rob the least HP and bump up the mph? Looked at the #6, but cant afford that.. :mix:

The Konrad is a good way to go for all around use. There was a 22 w/Arneson around a few years ago I was looking @. Spoke to the owner many times. He was getting 88 with an old T-turbo set-up. Probally 600HP. Arneson will give you best top end, but will sacrifice low speed control. I am personally a BIG fan of arneson.

Tried to upload some pics, but the site kept saying error, i will try again tomorrow.
I found a hydomotive q4 24 pitch prop for 150 $ i might try out. It came off a bravo 1 , it should fit my trs right?

Yup. That should get you into the seventies.
