Thread: Need info, installing a water pressure gauge

    I have a 2006 496HO with a closed cooling system.
    I want to install a water pressure guage to keep tabs of the pick up water.
    Where is the best place to install?
    What PSI should I get?

    I have a mechanical one on the motor. I would say mount it where you can see the gauge. Obviously on a boat like yours the engine would be a bad place for it so put the gauge on the dash. Do you have a water regulator? If so You might be able to put the sending unit behind that.

    Maybe I did not phrase that right..
    The 496, I have is a closed system.
    I have a mechical gauge that I will mount on the dash.
    I want to monitor the water I am getting through the system from the low water pick up.
    I am assuming I would want to do this after the intercooler.
    Any suggustions would be a great help..

    I have an in dash water pressure gauge by Auto Meter. It a mechanical gauge and the hose connects to the engine at the thermostat housing where the water exits the intake.

    My guess is that before the first cooler and after the seawater pump. So, inbetween the two.
    This way if you get blockage (likely in fins of first cooler) your psi will read higher than it normally does. And if psi reads lower than it normally does, you may have less water entering from outdrive.
    Remember, psi will change as speed of boat changes, so you must get used to and kind of remember the psi vs speed, therefore you can notice if any large or abnormal psi changes are happening.
    Disclaimer: above is a guess on my part and seems logical without ever doing this on said motor and outdrive. LOL>

    Just want another way to keep tabs of things..
