Recently purchased 21' Diamond, velvet drive, crusader v-drive, elec cav plate. I have a forged 460 chevy short block 10:1 comp, edelbrock victor intake & glenwood straight thru transom manifolds (no snails) I've been advised to use a 3 blade 12x15 steel prop. I plan to use a solid roller cam. I'm wanting to make approx 700hp & 80mph. I need input on heads, cam, carb, ign. and any other information that would help with this project. I have owned 3 flat bottoms this is my first v-hull day cruiser. Thank You.

Well, here's how I see this: Unless you're in love and have a spare $20k, you need to find a nice round-port and go for 52 - 55 MPH. Those logs are gonna limit your HP to about 425 - 450 net, so unless you're ready to put $4000 in a nice exhaust system your target is a bit high. Which is good, because even if you had the latest/biggest Crusader gearbox it's only rated for 450 lb/ft of torque and hasn't been made in 20 years. Plus, the Velvet Drive is rated to 500 lb/ft but only at 5000 RPM; they really don't like going much over 5200 without a costly build-up. And of course, these ratings are all with equipment in top shape. And this is where it all begins!
And have a Happy Father's Day (if it applies).

Oh, and that's if you have the BIG velvet drive, too!

    C-72 is the better one.

A friend of mine had a 72C in a blown 540 Schiada and never had any problems with it. I don't know anything about the Crusader V- Drive though. A 12" dia prop may be a little big. I like 11 1/2 or 11 3/4 for my Howard cruiser. The bigger props throw these boats around some at higher speeds, too much transom lift. Having owned flat bottoms I'm sure you know you need good underwater hardware and a steel prop.
