A really good politician is one who can steal and help for himself, his friends, and his family all while making it coinside being for the public good....and look good doing it.
We've got some real pro's at it around my parts. I think like half of the highway department directors of recent history have be indicted for something. Why? The highway dept gets the second most money in the budget. The Education Dept gets the first. The same guys has been running that group for 30 years. He is as crooked as rattlesnake and everybody knows it, but he always gets the teachers a raise before every big election. One of his best friends was Richard Scrushy, but Scrushy only wishes he was as good of a crook.
    Tom...here's word for you... assholyness

Oh yeah... I'd way rather have massive debt, no road construction, higher taxes, and a bunch of free stuff.
    Figured you were a Democrat!

I've followed American politics for a long time. Something interesting has happened that mirrors what has happened in Canadian politics.
At some point, perhaps in the 80s, the parties swapped doctrines and parties calling themselves conservative became socialist in nature, while socialist parties became conservative.
Here's how it works. The 'conservative' party (at least in name) will promise a tax cut, service increase, and generally assure everyone it will be cocaine and wh0res for everyone, once they get in. Once in, they control everything. They run massive deficits, increase regulation, increase tax, and generally run the economy into the ground. At least up here, we're not starting 'pre-emptive wars'.
We had that happen in the 80s here provincially. There was even a documentary on it that is completely outrageous. People from other provinces didn't believe the show but actually, the show leaves out the wildest of the antics. We all lined up to get our free shit and it only cost us a decade of poverty and hardship to pay for it. Pools, pool tables, garages... whatever you wanted, the government would pay half.
Now we have a socialist government. These guys have balanced the books, cut services, cut taxes, shrunk government, and generally reduced regulation. They even fixed our roads so it's safe to drive across the province on the trans-Canada highway now.
A good friend, and nazi conservative, told me, "This is the first conservative government we've had in over a decade."
Bush may be a Republican but he is not a conservative. I'm sure you'll all enjoy paying for the mess your in.
I have also been following our politics and political history for quite some time now.
What you are saying is partly correct. The Republicians did swing left when they got power. This happens when you have a weak President who will not stand up and use his veto pen on his own party, to resist the natural tendency of legislators to attempt to buy votes with public largess. However, the parties have not "swapped docterines" by any stretch of the imagination. The present Democratic party has swung the farthest left it has ever been in our nations history. It is currently to the left of where the socialist party (here in the U.S.) was just a few years ago on many issues. Don't let the current opposition to the war and the 1920s isolationist rhetoric of todays Americian Democrats fool you. They are farther left than they have ever been on most issues and (in my opinion) if they had the power the Republicians have had for the last 7 years, the U.S. would be a socialist state by now.

This happens when you have a weak President who will not stand up and use his veto pen on his own party, to resist the natural tendency of legislators to attempt to buy votes with public largess. Thus the Republicians have foolishly played right into the Democrat's (leftist) hands.

Don't let the current opposition to the war and the 1920s isolationist rhetoric of todays American Democrats fool you. It is just the rhetoric of an opposition party and not a reflection of their party's far left platform. The Democrats are farther left than they have ever been on most issues and (in my opinion) if they had the power the Republicians have had for the last 7 years, the U.S. would be a full on socialist state, in much deeper debt, and with higher taxes as well.

I have a choice of living in The United States or Canada. I like the land that is Canada, but I'm a Republican and I dont mean the party! Also have a conservative streak at time's, heck I'm even a fan of Nixon and Reagan, almost as good as my all time favorite President James Madison.
American politicians have nothing on the scum and bums (credit for the scum and bums from a good politician Ralph Klein) that run Canada when it comes to thievery. Heck former Prime Minister Paul Martin even got caught and nothing happened to him!
Wikipedia to save typing: On December 12, 2003 Martin became the 21st Prime Minister of Canada. On January 28, 2004 the federal government, in response to opposition party and media enquiries, revealed that CSL Group Inc. had received $162 million in federal government contracts, grants and loans since Paul Martin became Minister of Finance in 1993. Earlier figures released in 2003 had suggested CSL Group Inc. had only earned $137,000 during this time period.
Throughout the 1990s, CSL Group Inc. oversaw the reflagging of several former Canadian-registered vessels which were placed under the shipping registries of nations commonly referred to as flags of convenience, where safety and labour laws were relaxed to be more business-friendly. This was often criticized by Martin's political opponents.[3]
CSL Group Inc was Martins "families" private offshore company. Nice steal $162 million of tax-payers dollars and caught red handed and you dont go to jail. Un-like the U.S, Canadians are not taxed on their global income!

Kind of ironic that Hillary used a Canadian song for her ad campaign. Not just because of her healthcare views. Democrats want to again bring in the fairness doctrine to radio. Cant compete in a free market and choice enviroment with air America. So what do they do bring in censorship and ensure the liberals have a fair level playing field.
Un-like the United States, Canada does not have freedom of speech. In fact no rights within the Canadian constitution are absolute.
Canada Constitutional Act, 1982The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
The gov. can prescribe reasonable limits on anything in the Canadian constitution as long as its justified. Thats not a democratic society, thats on the same level as Cuba, its a friendly dictatorship.
Interesting side note: Until 1983 in BC schools many recited the Lords Prayer instead of a pledge of alligence before school start. Well the so called progressive conservatives ended that per a Supreme Court ruling. Funny considering they have the nothwithstanding clause that allows the government to pass laws that don't have to stand against the constitution, again friendly dictatorship complete with hate tribunals. A BC teacher wrote a letter to the editor of a local newspaper; his view gays cant marry because the Bible is against homosexual activity. He was fired as a teacher and brought before a hate tribunal for stating his view. It's the fairness doctrine today with liberal hate speech laws tomorrow.
Healthcare is the perfect example it's not a sign that Canada is some grand just society of social "democracy", its friendly dictatorship at its finest. Private health clinics popped up in BC. The thief Martin as one of his election spewls was to out law private care in Canada. Simply because it was so popular and showed how much better private is over public communist BS healthcare.
Healthcare how did Canada get this socialist BS, flat out it was a bribe from the so called conservatives to the commie NDP, simply so the conservatives to hold their minority government in power.
If President Bush had the power of a Canadian prime dictator we would all be in trouble. The first party with enough seats first in Canada's parliament to form a government wins the election regardless of the number of vote's. The prime minister is not elected they are appointed by the "Queen". Once in he can force his government and party to vote his will. Dont and he can kick you out of the party, heck he can get them voted out of parliament, ask Shiela Copps! Sometimes the party who forms a government first does not hold enough seats to stay in power. The opposing shadow gov. can call for a vote of no confidence in the sitting government. Hence why the conservative's cut a deal with the NDP, will pass your universal healthcare if you keep us in power over the liberals. Canada still has a pathetic communist healthcare because the gov. who attacks it will lose power. Has nothing to do with healthcare being a good thing!
Sure Bush and some Republican's dont really have many true conservative value's, at least President Bush has to sell Congress on amnesty for example, not ram it down America's throat; like the scum and bum Mulroney did with the GST tax!!!!!
