Ive got a 1989 150 black max merc outboard..i need a water pump changed and a basic tune up,and lower end fluid changed....or should i do it myself..how much does this run? and who should i take it to in the so ca. corona/riverside area....

impeller pump kit might run about 45-50 bucks.
lower unit fluid is probably sub 20 bucks total.
tune up-?? like changing plugs which is maybe the only thing to
    "tune" on an outboard......
    maybe the fuel filter...
plugs aren't cheap depending on what they are. 15 bucks a pop maybe?
    so, 50 + 6x15 + 20 + 10 = 170 + tax. no labor.. = nice afternoon in the
driveway playing with boats and motors.........
shop rates seem to be pushing 80 bucks an hour.. that work sounds
like minimum of 3 hours on the books. (even if the tech does it in 50 minutes)

50 min. is flying! More like 1.5 hr. in driveway! This CAN be done by you!
    It's all common sense!

    Mike,
the tattle-tail pee-spout should have water most of the time/if not all the
    time.
did you check clearance for the impellor after you installed it? check shaft
rotation binding, although even if it was hard to spin by hand, the starter
motor would still spin it, but ruin it in the process..... hopefully you made
sure which direction the impeller "blades" needed to be installed...
my motor spins clockwise if you are looking down onto the engine. so my
impeller blades are bent back as if being held back on the outer edge.
    does that make sense-??
mercury makes a huge deal on instructions about do not reverse the
shaft direction at all because it can cause the blades to bend backward,
and if they are like that in the housing, they will destroy themselves
quickly when the motor is started, along with no cooling being pumped
thru the engine causing damage also...
that being said, another thing is crank the water flow (from the house
to the cooling ears) all the way up full blast when running the motor.
yeah, you'll have water pissing everywhere, but supplying the motor with
    enough capacity is paramount..........
it's gotta be one of those 2 things.. or, making sure both impellers are the
    same diameter, and thickness..
    good luck Mike...

You prbably have a ton of water coming out the lower unit because you have no back pressure. Normal. If you can hold your hand under it and keep it there it's not too hot. Stick it in a barrel and it will pee assuming you still have the water turned on. Use ngk BU8H from NAPA or Champion L76V from Wal- Mart. $3.50 here.

Not many people like Champion! I had problems once... had the rep. come to
my shop to inspect a plug that would not fire. HE could not find why! Said a
spark plug is a very simple device, the same thing can be obtained with a piece
of wood and a nail! We broke it open and still couldn't tell me why it wouldn't fire!

The champion was referenced for a second choice altho I have used them in my drag motor and they worked fine. They do however foul easier but can save the day.
