Is a salt based water softener the only option available for a home to remove the hardness of the water? Is there some other type of system that can be used? Just curious if there is a better system that does leave that still soapy feeling.....

Adjust the softener correctly and use potassium instead of salt and you should be good to go. A correctly set w s will not leave the soapy felling. Most people set them to high for there areas hardness. You can look up your waters hardness on your water supply companys web site. By law they have to do testing and make the test available to the public.
