making floors beautifull with wood

i have a 72 sanger flat. i wanna put the wood in the center like orig but how is it done. iv seen this sheets of balsa or what ever is used. is it glued down then what is the this clear over the floor to make it look like a million bucks. my last boat had it but was done when i got it. please give me any tip or even where to get the wood thanks
