Thread: ***boat for cancer

    Tom Brown
I enjoy a good tumor as much as the next guy but a friend set up a ***boat team on Folding at Home and asked if I would post details on this forum.
If you're not familiar with the Folding at Home project , it is an effort to study the way proteins fold using a world wide, public participation, supercomputer that runs on spare cycles of participants.
"What happens if proteins don't fold correctly? Diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, BSE (Mad Cow disease), an inherited form of emphysema, and even many cancers are believed to result from protein misfolding."
... so it's only partially about cancer. Really, it's broader medical research being done by the folks at Standord University.
If interested, you can join the team by downloading the client and entering our team number - 76936. The client will run in the background using your idle cycles and you won't notice it.
It's really only useful on machines that run for long periods. On something like a laptop that is turned on for a few hours a week, the results would be invalid before they could be returned. Also, if you have a really slow machine or are short on resource, it's probably not a great idea to run the F@H client as it will strain your machine even further.
There is nothing to say this project will cure cancer, or anything, or even that it will assist in any cures. It is simply a project done on faith that by lending some resource to a sharp team of medical researchers, good things will happen.

I've been running this thing for a couple of weeks now and I can't say I've noticed having it running. It takes a few days to complete the first result and another day or two to see your name on the results page.
The team was set up by sorry dog. It's great to see him venture from his typical focus on the pharmacutical side of medical research.
With four members, we are currently ranked 9461 of 74177 teams. Some guy named Liebniz seems to have joined just a few days ago and is already kicking my ass. I'm working on infecting his computer with a virus. In the mean time, please feel free to join the project and the team.
    *****Update*****
This page will show the team members, work units, and accrued points.

Thanks for the info, Tom. I installed this on a few of my computers here at home, so far no results have been returned yet but should be within the next day or two. Unfortunately though I don't have any of the graphics cards that are supported by the GPU version of the client as the GPUs are much better at crunching the numbers for this.
