Congress to vote on DoD budget proposal asking for tens of millions of dollars for development, purchase of new systems to defend Israeli skies against ballistic missiles
WASHINGTON – The 2008 budget for the US Department of Defense includes the allocation of tens of millions of dollars for Israel to either independently develop or purchase existing defense systems to counter possible ballistic rocket attacks.
The new system would be used in addition to Israel's existing sophisticated 'Arrow' system, a project the US continues to fund.
On Thursday the House Appropriations Committee voted to give Israel an additional $70 million in defense aid beyond the $80 million requested by the administration.
Should the budget pass both the House and Senate votes, Israel stands to receive no less than $150 million. These funds are not part of the 'regular' US defense aid budget for Israel, which stands at $2.4 billion.
Israeli ambassador to the US, Salai Meridor, who worked along with other Israeli diplomats to increase funding for Israel's ballistic defense systems, welcomed the decision.
It would provide $25 million more for Arrow missile co-production and integration, $135 million to buy a Theater High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, fire unit and $45 million for a US-Israeli short-range missile defense system dubbed "David's Sling."
David's Sling, a collaborative effort between Israel's RAFAEL (Armaments Development Authority) and US military contractor Raytheon, is expected to be operational within four years and is designed to defend against Fajar missiles, which during the Second Lebanon War were fired at Israeli cities. The system does not provide defense against the shorter range Katyusha rockets however.
All three projects involve interceptors designed to shoot down ballistic missiles in the terminal phase of their flight paths.
The Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, a booster group funded partly by companies involved in building missile shields, applauded the initiative to further integrate US and Israeli missile defenses.
"The more missile defense systems deployed the safer and more stable it is for the United States, our allies and our friends," said Riki Ellison, the group's president.

Investing money in the US is hardly a another socialist giveaway.
The creation of new American jobs is obviously important. But IMO, it is even more important to remove the incentives to those that are currently exporting US jobs to other Countries due to cheaper labor. IMO, this is every bit as Anti-American as the hiring illegals.

    Blown,
We could do plenty here in the US with a portion of what we are spending in Iraq, as well. We need way more invested in this Country. and I'm not referring to social programs. Education for American citizens, securing our borders, ports, airspace and water ways, fixing and building roads, etc., ect. just to scratch the surface. What we give Israel is chump change in relation to our spending in Iraq.

Just EXACTLY what is your complaint with the Federal Highway System?
It's in pretty damn dood repair in my part of the country, and most roads are STATE projects, not federal, so no good there blown.
And just EXACTLY WHAT would you have done to "improve" schools since we are already spending more $$$ per student than any other country in the world and getting bumkis for all our money spent?
Your line (fixing the roads, better skools) is feel-good BS with no practical aplication, like usual. Sure looks like you could have used the better sCHool tho.

In the Old Testament, Almighty Jehovah God would smite the enemies of Israel....Nowadays; faith of her fathers has been replaced by Yankee dollars.
This is just the latest effort of U.S. enabling Israel's existence in spite of her own serious mistakes and foreign policy blunders.
Here in PR many of us type of the folly of socialism and how we should get out of this or that...Israel for one reason or another is somehow exempt. After 60 years I still don't get it. Either make it a state of the U.S. or let them fend for themselves.
Somehow, we convince ourselves that more money will make her stronger when, just like everybody else, it makes the recipient weaker....
As partners, Israel has a less than sterling record; espionage, theft, and outright military attack lead me to conclude we should be more judicious in our check writing.
IDF is having difficulty meeting their recruiting goals 'cause the young folks are rich, lazy, and lack the commitment to the country the preceding generation so fervently demonstrated. Additionally, people wearing jewelry show up to eat free meals designated to fight hunger of the poor.
In the final analysis, Israel will be assimilated by her neighbors. She should develop skills to get along with her future in-laws!
All these fancy weapons and easy money won't protect Israel from her greatest foes...demographics and apathy.
    CC
