Any advice would be appreciated. Just got back from NY - my 87 y/o mother in law lives in a rent-controlled complex in Manhattan. No A/C. Can't use a portable or a floor model where the hose goes out the window. Only way to get A/C is through the management company. Their units, they install, and then your monthly rent goes up several hundred $$$'s year round. They inspect exteriors and monitor power bills looking for DIYers. No inside laundry, so no dryer vent to tie into.
I was thinking swamp cooler, but I understand they're no bueno during high humidity. (It hit 85+ our last two days on Long Island).
We're not trying to screw the landlord, just trying to get Mom through the dog days of summer. She's not willing to gamble with the property manager by trying to sneak in a portable.
    Thanks for any ideas,
    Tom

Some of the new standup portable units are unbelievable. They are quiet, and use very little power. The can plug into any 120 V outlet. For the condensing fan exhaust, run a flex duct to a cracked window, or use the exhaust fan over the stove or bathroom exhaust fan. The units run about 450-600 dollars and do a great job. The condensate is caught in a container, and will shut the machine off when full. Just empty and start it up again. This will keep Mom cool. Good luck!!

    These kinda units.
They draw about 15 to 20 amps/115 volt so the wall outlets has to have some huevos.
    Forget Swamp coolers.

1 ton of cooling is 12,000 BTU's. Effectively 1 ton will do about 400-450 square feet of family living space. Don't look for one of these units to do a 1000 sq ft apt, but its a start. TPC is right about the amp draw on these units, but with a little moving things around, no problem running one in a home.
