Lots of companies are making in-line screen filters from 100 to 30 micron. They use everything from just a screen, to a cleanable screen element, to a replaceable paper cartridge. Check the Summit catalogue. I had a Russel filter right off each tank, which were small, about 3" long, and an inch in diameter with a stainless screen. They were aluminum, with a -8 macined fitting on each end. Great pre-filter. I'm all for a filter before the pump as CFM said, most fuel pumps won't take much in the way of foreign particles. One after the pump isn't a bad idea either. I only ran the pre-filters. You can get these aluminum filters in just about any configuration. System One, Russel, Edelbrock, Paxton, Aeromotive, and on and on. They're easy to mount and take up very littlte room.
