My widowed Mother-in law lives alone in a seniors only development in Hemet. We were considering getting her one of those "Life-Alert" deals because we were concerned that if something happened, she couldn't get to the phone to call for help. (I've fallen and I can't get up.)
She told us that all the residents there discussed it, and realized that they all had newer cars, with the "panic" buttons on the remote key fob. They decided that rather than spend the money on Life Alert, they just keep their keys, or the extra fob nearby and if anything happened, they would push the panic button, setting off the car horn/alarm.
Now the entire community knows that if they hear a neighbor's alarm going off, even from inside the garage, they call 911 and get help to them.
Pretty good idea and definitely cheaper than Life Alert.
