I live in California now but was wondering if there was any Niagra River Rats on the fourum. If youve never been on the upper or lower Niagra River I highly recomend it, I spent the first thirteen years of my life there and the summers there are still the best I've had.

    Billet,
I have lived on the Mighty Niaqara all my life. First on the Tonawanda side of the river(Niagara Street) and now across the river on Grand Island(East River Road). As I type this I am looking at the beautiful sunrise coming up over the river. I currently own 3 v-drives a 21'Rayson Craft, a Starfire copy and my Team Biesemeyer. I started racing in the SK class in 1966 and have been at it ever since, being lucky enough to win my share along the way. There are only a few v-drives in this area. At one time we had 10-15 of them but they were all race boats. Besides mine there is a couple other race boats and maybe 2or3 others. If your ever back in the area look me up. Tim

How cool, some of our best friends lived on Grand Island, Myself I grew up on Cayuga Island, as did my entire family, if you are into stock outboards at all then you might know my family, my dad is Jim McCombs, he raced D stock hydro and runabout for many years in that area.
I plan on getting out there next year for the entire summer I want my kids to know what its like to live on the river like I did when I was a kid. Thanks Billet.

    Billet,
I do remember a few outboard races being held on the Niagara River in the 50's but by the 60's most outboard racing was gone from this area. I do remember a few names your Father may remember. Emerson Hass, Chet Web, Freddie Herbert, Phil Reed. I know the Mangs were quite involved from Lasalle.
It sure would be nice for the Kids to be able to spend summers on the river. Just this morning my Wife and I took a ride to the Falls took a ride on the Maid of the Mist (a must for all visitors) and left a little donation to the Casino. We looked on Cauga Island before we built on Grand Island sure is a nice place to have grown up as a kid. Hell I'm 60 and am still a Kid. Still a wonderfull place to live!!

My dad grew up two or three doors down from the Mangs, and I grew up accross from the launch ramps on the island, always entertaining during the long weekends.
The 50s is when my dad was racing, Ron Mang had the last boat that my Grandfather built for my dad it now belongs to a friend of our who has restored it and takes to classic boat races. His name is Larry Downs, also a drag racer a hot rodder.
Did you by any chance know the Lunney family, they were on East River road as well, very good and long time friends of ours.

    James,
I do not know that family. I do know what you mean about a good afternoon of entertainment just watching people trying to launch and take their boats out. We spent many hours watching the fun !!! Always someone that launched the car as well and someone driving the boat into the back of the car.
This weekend is the big vintage raceboat and classic boat show here on Grand Island. Always a great show worth going to. Maybe your Dad's boat will be there. Was there a name and number on the boat ? I've had trouble getting on this site the last day or so, You can e-mail me at schulte10@verizon.net if you's like Tim
