Are you talking about a WEP key? That's not going to be written down anywhere on the router. It doesn't show anywhere in the properties either, it's basically a password. I think you're going to need to go into your router's setup 192.168.1.1 and generate a new WEP key.
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner!
The wep/wpa key stored on your old laptop is unrecoverable, it becomes encrypted upon entry. You can get into your router with a hard wire connection, access the current wep/wpa key or create a new one.
Do this through internet explorer by connecting to the routers ip address through internet explorer i.e. http://192.168.1.1 <-this is the ip address 90% of the time, if it doesnt work go to start>run type in cmd when the 'dos' command prompt comes up type ipconfig then use the number for default gateway, this is the router's ip address. When you go to try and get into the router it will ask for a username/password this is usually leave the username blank and the password is admin or both are admin, or username admin no password, depending the mfg of router.

Once you get into the router with 192.168.1.1 (linksys) or 192.168.0.1 (dlink) the normal default password and username is admin. If you have a linksys and the pw has been changed, hold the power button down for 10 seconds, and it will clear out any changes from default.
